In 2006, King County was the nation’s 14th largest county with 1.8 million people, but the existing sewage system was not built to accommodate the population level. King County Washington Department of Public Works awarded Kiewit Pacific Co., a subsidiary of Kiewit Corporation, the $91 million project to construct the Brightwater Influent Pump Station and associated facilities.
When complete the pump station will be a 130-million-gallons-per-day influent station that can expand to 170 million gallons per day. It includes an 83-foot-deep, 77-foot-diameter binocular-shaped shaft three stories belowground for pumping equipment; a two-story 10,000-square foot above-grade building; two pumping units and heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.
The team is constructing a 7,700-square-foot generator building, three diesel generator sets and a 15,000-gallon underground storage tank; and a 7,400-square-foot outdoor odor control facility with 16-foot-tall screening walls, a 32,000-standard-cubic-feet-per-minute bioscrubber and carbon scrubbing units. Lastly, the team is constructing a 2,000-square-foot chemical building and two 10,000-gallon chemical tanks.
